Fun little plinker/trainer!

I just picked up a new Taurus model 94 .22 revolver on aturday. Price was normally $369 but here's how it came out. $40 off for Father'sa day sale, $20 off coupon for frequent shopping, $130 in gift cards from points on my credit card that gets paid off every month (no interest paid ever). I ended up paying $179 plus taxes on a $300 purchase.

The revolver is nicer than I thought it would be. It's got a nice feel and weight to it. It's very accurate with only a 4inch barrel and it's super fun. As you know I've been looking for a nice .22 pistol for a while and have worried about the constant jamming with automatic models. The cylider holds 9 shots and the action is double or single. The sight is much nicer than I thought. It's got the red fiber optic front sight (not sure what it's called) that is really user friendly, especially for teaching new shooters. My wife (no experience with guns) likes the feel of it and is looking forward to learning to shoot next week.

After only putting about 100 rounds through the gun, I feel I can highly recommend it.

I will as soon as I get a chance. I was going to find one from the Taurus site but they didn't have one.

Thanks for sharing.
Taurus has become one of my favorite companies.
They have been making great guns for a couple of years now.

Googled it, or at least one version.

OK, I've got some pictures. Same as above but stainless. I tried to get a shot looking through the sights but couldn't get a good focus. I wanted to show how well that front sight post stood out. Here they are. Sorry I forgot to throw a SAE in there for perspective.

Taurus .22 LR, broke one dry firing in between unpacking and the show case..

One hundred rounds does not make a weapons test!

Never dry fire rimfire weapons, you can dammage/break the firing pin on the chamber edge.

Thanks for the info AZ.

I put just under 500 rounds through it over the past week while on vacation. Very fun and very accurate. This is probably the most satisfied I have been with a gun purchase but that may be due to going into it with low expectations.

Alaska: I know 100 rounds does not make for a reliable weapons test. What I was trying to say was that even after having fired only about 100 rounds, my impression of the gun was extremely positive.

I had a chance to pick up one of these one, and I walked away when I saw how chewed up the indexer on the back of the cylinder was. It might not have even been safe enough to fire. You might want to watch it for wear.

A friend of mine suggested I check that out before I buy and it's clean. The machining on the gun isn't perfect, but it pretty good quality.

Liberty, I'm a 61 year old gunsmith btw. I can't think of any modern rim fire that allows the firing pin to protrude that far.

Codger, thanks for the reports!

I'm interested in just how accurate your Taurus is? Maybe one day you could try a box of match grade (Wolf MT is the cheapest high grade but may not be available there) rested from bags? Make it easy on yourself Codger, 25yds would be nice but even at 15yds? I'm curious about comparisons being an old gun nut, the Smiths of late have even been iffy accuracy wise.

My measure/standard of accuracy in rimfire pistols is the old Ruger Mark 2s and the later Mark 3s and of course the older S&W Masterpiece model 17s.

Thanks for an interesting thread!

Re: Fun little plinker/trainer!

Alaska: That's a good idea. I probably will not be able to get back to the gun club for a few weeks but I will give it a go. In the places I have been shooting so far, there has not really been an easy set up for a good supported accuracy test. I've been happy with the shot groupings and every time I shot it at my handy plinking target I scored a hit. I don't think I've fired it at less than 20 yards yet. I'll take pictures of the targets when I'm done and do it at a few different ranges.

Also, I appreciate the feedback on the rimfire firing pin set up. Good to know.

Good idea Vike. I'm actually starting to feel a bit ill as I sit here doing the man's work. cough...cough...

Tomorrow (tuesday) night I'm watching the young one while the wife works. You delivering at Iglehart? Dang it. Can you record it?

Had one in 22 mag. Wasn't accurate enough to hunt squirrels with. Replaced it with an old $60 pawn shop H&R 922 that was.

Picked up this lil' number last weekend (got held over by FBI ) for y'all that don't know, this is a GSG-5p astoundingly similar to the HK MP5. I will be attaching a stock, scope, and silencer (with proper stamps ofcourse ) soon enough.

That looks like a neat little plinker!

Any opinions on the Taurus .17 HMR or HM2 for for sudden and unwelcomed up close and personal encounters vs maybe the
Taurus 94 .22. Have the chance to pick up a Taurus .17 HM2 so wanted some feedback. Told the cal wont penetrate walls but still offer serious discouragement when needed. Need a small light weight in case CCW ever allowed in my socialist state. TIA

What kind of "sudden and unwelcomed up close and personal encounters", a squirrel or a bunny rabbit, maybe? Forget about .17 or .22 cal weapons for defensive uses. The .17 HMR is a solution in search of a problem. Expensive ammo vs. .22 cal, higher velocity seems to be its only redeeming quality. I never understood why someone would want one.

AgAuGal, for defensive purposes, don't look at anything smaller than a .380 Auto at the bare minimum. 9mm/.38 Special would be better.

I agree but I was thinking if someone were able to sneak in and I only had seconds to respond to an attack a .17 is small enough to keep under the pillow and use in a pinch / close encounter. I expect my 870 will do what I need if I am awake and awares. It is the surprise and unexpected I was considering the .17 for as an alternative. It would take some extra time to get the shotgun in the ready postition  But I think I have come to the same conclusion, a lightweight .22 maybe the Taurus 94. So many guns to chose from :thumb.aspx:

.22 is a great weapon for head shots. Very effective and quiet, works 100% of the time if you don't miss.

Uh huh. This is really poor advise. .22 LR is not a defensive round. I suppose you'll trot out how many "hitmen" use .22 cal, urban myth.

Re: Fun little plinker/trainer!

I agree that .380, 9 mm and up is best. But any firearm is better than no firearm. If a perp meets up with a .22 revolver barrel pointed 6 inches from his face, I don't think he's going to ask "Hmmm, I wonder what caliber is that?" And there's no law saying you have to fire only once. Empty the damn thing if you need to. Besides, .22 LR is the best priced ammo right now even with recent price increases, so that lends itself well to practice, practice, practice.
But yes, consider at least a .380 or a 9.

Yeah it's not an urban myth, .22s have been proven useful time and time again in combat of all kinds.

I know that a .22 is not the best choice for everything but in the right hands and the right setup it is deadly. Remember that the events that lead up to the shooting are more important than the gun used. The battle is won before it's fought.

Read up about babyface nelson, my namesake. He took 17 hits to the torso from the feds 1911s and walked right up to them and mowed them down at point blank range with his thompson. He was a little 5'6 guy too.

No such thing as a defensive round.

The .45 sucks as a defensive round and so does everything else.

I heard or read one time, not too long ago, according to the fbi, more people are killed with .22's than any other......guess there are lot's more .22 out there
